24-Meeting General English Course
The 24-Meeting General English Course is managed under the Center of English for International Communication (CEIC). The programs are designed for people who intend to learn and to develop their English communication skills. The course is conducted in small groups, which allows all participants to communicate actively in English.
In order to maintain the interactive teaching and learning process in the class, the students will be grouped into three levels based on the placement-test result. Each level is divided into sub-levels to emphasize the learning focus.
Levels:
Beginner: Basic Communication Skills (Real Beginner, Mid Beginner, Upper Beginner)
At this level, the participants learn basic communication in English, for example, to give information about themselves and people around them.
Intermediate: Communication Skills (Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate)
At this level, the participants learn both verbal and written English communication to deal with more specific topics, for example, communication at workplace.
Advanced: Public speaking/Seminar (Pre-advanced, Advanced)
At this level the participants are guided to write research paper and to present it in class. The participants have more opportunities to state their ideas about specific topics of their interests. They are also trained to participate actively in seminars and lectures.
Outdoor Activities
Some outdoor activities are set to support and meet the participants' needs in learning and mastering English. Some of them are the movie club and the table manner course.
1. Movie Club
Similar to a conversation club, the movie club focuses more on discussions about a film. The students will watch English films without Indonesian subtitles. After enjoying and understanding a film, the students will discuss the film in class under the tutor's guidance.
2. Table Manner Course
This short course is presented by having dinner together with all friends and instructors, where the participants also learn international table manners. The participants will watch, learn, and experience the feel of having international dinner.
3. Other outdoor activities
Outdoor activities such as Game Zone, Show Your Tallent, and Treasure Hunt can be held on special occassions. In more relaxing learning atmosphere, the participants practice their English.
The English Extension Course (EEC) is a two year certificated program designed for those who wish to learn English intensively in order to complete the program, the participants will have to take eight subjects in every semester.
EEC classes are handled by the lecturers of the English Education and English Letters Study Programs. This course is to develop the participants' competence in using English actively both in writing and speaking, for various purposes of communication with native speakers of English and foreigners in general.
Program Description
1. Graded and systematized language elements (Structure, Vocabulary, and Pronunciation): presented as the basis of acquiring the four most important language skills (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing).
2. Reading and Translation: presented to help the participants get access to wide-ranging, current, up-to-date information, knowledge and technology.
3. Basic English Correspondence: presented to train the participants to master correspondence skills in English.
4. Cross Cultural Understanding and Speaking: presented to help the participants intensively and extensively understand and respect their own culture and expose it to other English-related and global cultures.
5. Test-taking Exercises and Strategies: presented to help the participants get prepared for various internationally-acknowledged English language tests or assessments.

The Center of English for Specific Purposes (CESP) is a division of the Language Institute which offers specific English courses. The CESP participants are college students, employees, missionaries, government staffs, teachers, health practitioners (doctors, nurses), etc.
Specific ESP classes can be designed upon request.
Types of Courses:
There are two types of courses offered by the CESP, namely:
1. English for Occupational Purposes:
This program is to provide professionals with English skills to support their ocupation. This program consists of English for School Teachers, English for Business Correspondence, English for Business Communication, English for Government Officers, English for Equipment Maintenance Technicians, and so forth.
2. English for Academic Purposes:
This program is designed for those (students, lecturers, and others) who intend to develop their English proficiency to support their academic needs. This program consists of English for Academic Writing, English for Academic Reading and Writing, and Presentation classes.
All the courses are available for groups and individuals.
The Language Testing Center periodically conducts ITP TOEFL training courses 4 times a year (March/April, June/July, August/September, and November/December). These courses are meant to prepare the participants to take the TOEFL test in order to reach satisfactory TOEFL scores. Participants are to join the training schedule. At the end of the course, the participants may take an ITP TOEFL test at the cost of US$2 (excluding the course fee), while non-participants pay US$28 for the test. Outside the regular schedule, the Language Testing Center also offers ITP TOEFL tests on request.
The Translation Center is to provide translation services from Indonesian to English and vice-versa for individuals or institutions both within and outside the University. The expedient, reliable, and speedy services are offered at competitive costs. Customers are invited to contact the Language Institute Secretariat for information about the approximate cost and time for each service. The document translations are certified by the Language Institute.

The classroms used for the learning process are fully air-conditioned, furnished with a white board, desk and comfortable chairs. Some are equipped with a tape recorder, a television set, a video set and LCD projector. Most rooms are set for private or small classes. Some larger rooms are available for seminars and presentation practices.
The Self-Access Center is a supporting center for students to maximize their learning through self-study. The SAC learning media are designed for this purpose. It is also equipped with multi-media and computers for students' optimum learning.

The Language Laboratory is designed to help students improve their language skills, especially listening. The lab is a furnished with the newest digital listening station and software programs to help the students develop their listening skills.
The Language Institute is located at Campus II of Sanata Dharma University, Jl. Affandi Mrican, Tromol Pos 29, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
The University is located in the northern part of Yogyakarta City adjacent to two largest state universities in Yogyakarta. It is a good place to study, a distance away from the crowded centers of business activities, yet it is easy enough to reach the city centers by public transportation.
Hotels, shops and supermarkets can be found nearby. It takes only about 10 minutes by taxi or about 5 km to the downtown of Yogyakarta. Hospitals, police stations and other public facilities can be reached within 5 minutes by taxi.
